About BCALOA
Rooted in the Land. Built by Farmers.
The BC Agricultural Land Owners Association is a grassroots organization founded by the people who live on, and work BC's agricultural land. We are dedicated to advocating for farmers and land owners in British Columbia.
Our History
How BCALOA came to be
BCALOA was born out of necessity. As regulatory pressures on agricultural land in British Columbia grew — from the Agricultural Land Commission to municipal bylaws and provincial policy — farmers and rural landowners found themselves increasingly without a unified voice. Individual operators, no matter how experienced or committed, had little power to influence the decisions being made about their land.
A small group of farmers from across the province began meeting informally to share concerns and coordinate responses to proposed regulations. What started as a handful of neighbours around a kitchen table grew into a province-wide association representing thousands of acres of working farmland and the families who steward it.
Today, BCALOA is recognized as a credible and principled voice in BC agricultural policy. We engage with government, participate in public consultations, and provide our members with the information and support they need to protect their land and their livelihoods.
Our Mandate
What we stand for
Protecting Property Rights
We believe that farmers and landowners have the right to manage their land according to sound agricultural principles, free from unnecessary regulatory interference. We monitor legislation and policy that affects agricultural land use and advocate for fair, evidence-based rules.
Supporting Small-Scale Agriculture
Industrial agriculture is not the only model. We champion the small-scale, diversified, and family-run operations that form the backbone of BC's food system — and we fight for policies that allow them to thrive rather than merely survive.
Promoting Regenerative Practices
Healthy land is the foundation of everything. We support farming methods that build soil health, protect water quality, and strengthen the long-term resilience of BC's agricultural land base. Good stewardship and good business are not in conflict.
Amplifying the Grassroots Voice
Policy is made by those who show up. BCALOA ensures that farmers and landowners are present and heard in the rooms where decisions are made — from local council chambers to provincial consultations.
Board of Directors
Led by farmers, for farmers
BCALOA is governed by a volunteer board of working farmers and landowners from across British Columbia. Every board member is an active member of the agricultural community they represent. Board positions will be announced shortly.
